Cuba
This is a moment many Cubans will remember, where they were when they first heard Fidel Castro had died.
The announcement came on state television on a Friday night, meaning many locals were unaware of it, hearing the news first from reporters on the street.
Although he had been frail for some time, many were shocked at his death.
“The death of the commander has surprised me, I can’t believe it because he is such a powerful man, so strong…I really don’t believe it,” explained one young man on Malecon’ promenade in Havana.
“It’s a normal life process,” admits a woman from Havana continuing that, “it was news that no one is ever ready to receive. Less so, news of the Commander’s death.”
One young resident says, “Well, I feel a bit shaken, I just don’t understand. He was a public figure that everybody loved and respected.”
As the news sinks in, the sun is rising for the first time on a Cuba without Fidel.
