Pope Francis has selected fake news as his main subject for the 2018 World Communications Day to champion journalism for peace.
He tweeted on Friday that the theme for the annual celebration established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 is the John 8:32 bible verse: “The truth will set you free”.
“I have chosen this theme for World Communications Day 2018: “The truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32). Fake news and journalism for peace.”

The Vatican’s Secretariat for Communication said the theme was selected as a result of distortion of facts by fake news creating and fueling strong polarization of opinions.
The day will fall on May 13, 2018, which will the 52nd edition.
It was first observed on May 7, 1967, less than two years after the Second Vatican Council wanted to draw attention to the communications media and the enormous power they have for cultural transformation.
