The appointment comes a week after the president was sworn in as the country’s first new leader in almost three decades following his election in November.
Thieba, who is an economist, has little political experience and has been charged with forming President Roch Kabore’s government.
The 55 year-old will have the difficult task of leading the first post-transition government.
The country continues with a democratic transition, after 27 years under President Blaise Compaoré, who was overthrown in October last year.
