South Africa Zoo gives frozen fruits to animals

A South African zoo has now resorted to giving animals frozen fruits to increase their body water content.

With the heat wave facing South Africa, the animals are being fed with frozen food despite having automatic sprinkling water.

“We make sure that the animals have all access to water, and we are changing the water regularly especially in summer, with this heat wave. We do check them more often, because the animals tend to drink more water,” said Kresen Pillay, the zoo veterinary.

The veterinary pay close attention to their drinking habit as they have to device new ways of increasing their water level.

“One of the things that we usually do is to give them water through automatic sprinklers, but obviously with the drought we need to pay attention to their drinking habit. So it is a good alternative,” said Catherine Visser.

Animals look depressed during the sunny days and usually lie under the trees. Different types of frozen meals are usually given to different animals. Lions for instance are usually served with frozen fish while bears are given frozen Candies that made of apples, pears, chicks and minced meat.

South Africa’s national weather service had announced that the country is experiencing the lowest rainfall and driest summer in more than 110 years. Adding that the country suffered its driest year on record in 2015, threatening food security.
