Niger's Electoral Commission releases partial results
Media reports suggest Hama Amadou currently behind bars for baby-trafficking charges, has a narrow lead but figures on Niger’s independent electoral commission’s website put president Issoufou in the lead.
The reports indicate that Amadou has won 39.71 percent of the votes counted so far while President Issoufou has 38.24 percent.
But on the CENI website Hama Amadou has 29.17 percent while President Issoufou has 40.18 percent.
The election process in Niger came to a close Monday evening due to logistical problem that prevented voters from casting their ballots on Sunday.
Among the affected areas were Zinder, Tahoua, Diffa and the Tillaberi regions.
14 candidates contested to replace Mahamadou Issoufou who is seeking a second mandate in office.
