Burkina Faso bakers protest poor working conditions

Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou is running out of bread, as most bakeries remained closed on Friday and Saturday, after workers downed their tools to protest poor working conditions.

They gathered in their thousands on Friday, to express their grievances to the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, denouncing poor compensations and remunerations.

The objective of their three-day strike is to push their employers to consider their demands; respect for freedom of association, reinstatement of fellow employees who have been sacked, and the signing of an agreement for better conditions of life and work.

The strike has caused scarcity of bread, particularly in the capital, but the shortage has slowly spread to several other cities in the country.

The bakers federation has said if their demands are not met they’ll take alternative and further action to seek a solution to their concerns.
