Millions in need of aid in Sudan - European Commission
During a visit to the North African country, a top European Commission official said that the humanitarian situation is due to the recent population displacements in Darfur and a surge of arrivals from South Sudan.
The commission offered 14 million US dollars to the UN World Food Programme for supporting relief operations in the country.
In April, WFP said it was facing a shortfall of about 180 million US dollars for the next 12 months. This the said was was hampering its work in Sudan, particularly with South Sudanese refugees.
This year, more than 70,000 South Sudanese have arrived in Sudan fleeing conflict and food shortages in their war-torn country.
South Sudan broke into conflict in December 2013. Since then hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese have fled the young nation to neighbouring countries.
