Kenyan police have dispersed protesters in the capital Nairobi during an anti-corruption rally.
Kenya: Hundreds of protesters dispersed by police
The police fired tear gas and used water cannons at hundreds of protesters gathered in a park. The protesters were demonstrating in response to reports of a public health scandal that has rocked the nation.
The Ministry of Health has defended itself from accusations of wrongdoing in response to the leaked internal audit that 5 billion Kenya shilling or 50 million dollars had been spent badly.
“Today’s event is a demonstration against theft of public funds especially by government, but it’s also an event that is really meant to bring to the fore, the failure of our government, the failure of our president, who publicly indicated that he is not able to do anything against corruption,” said protester Ekure Okot.
Corruption scandals have plagued the current government despite President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is expected to seek a second term next year, making a campaign pledge to clamp down on graft.
