CHAPECOENSE LIFT FIRST TITLE SINCE PLANE CRASH
The most heartbreaking story in sport of 2016 was the tragedy that hit Brazilian football team Chapecoense when their plane crashed in Colombia, killing all but six of the 77 passengers.
Only three of the Brazilian club’s players survived.
They’ve had to rebuild their team from scratch because of the disaster, but less than a year on and they have their first bit of silverware.
Top clubs from Brazil and Argentina offered to loan players to Chapecoense, who signed 25 new players this season and promoted nine from the youth team.
They lifted the Santa Catarina state championship trophy on Sunday for the second straight year.
The small club from southern Brazil lost 1-0 at home in the second leg of the final playoff against Avai but the aggregate score was 1-1 and they took the title because of a better regular season record.
A wonderful turnaround for everyone associated with the club.
SCOTLAND: SICK LINESMAN ‘RED CARDED’
The world of Sport is full of misadventures and unusual events. In Scotland, a linesman was shown a straight red card – for throwing up on the touchline.
Andrew McWilliam was running the line in Saturday’s Scottish Premier League clash between Kilmarnock and Dundee.
And when referee Craig Thomson ran over to investigate – he found his assistant a little worse for wear.
The game was then halted as McWilliam spewed next to the advertising hoardings, much to the amusement of fans inside Rugby Park.
He was hilariously shown a red card by ref Thomson. Of course he couldn’t really be red-carded out of the game; it was a joke.
After a three-minute delay McWilliam managed to compose himself and saw out the rest of the game. Some joked that probably the reason he was throwing is because of the dreadful football he was watching.
Until next Friday.
