Ghana's first female elections chief scoffs at 'faceless' detractors

Ghana’s first female elections chief has scoffed at recent allegations by a section of staff that she was abusing her office in respect of procurement and some administrative procedures.

A petition has been presented to President Akufo-Addo calling for her dismissal. She in turn has asked that the petition be dismissed.

She told local media portals that she was waiting to hear from the presidency stressing her preparedness to defend the claims she described as “product of an overactive evil imagination.”

“The political motive hunting would not serve the greater purpose. The ‘motiveless malignity’ behind this Petition are self-seeking and faceless individuals with the sole motive of satisfying their purely personal vendetta against my person and protecting illegal financial interests,” she said in a statement.

“I understand from the media that the Presidency has received the alleged petition. I have my full responses ready for each and every allegation made in the so-called petition.

“However, in deference to His Excellency the President of the Republic, for whom I have the highest levels of respect, I would respectfully wait to be formally informed by the Presidency before I make my responses public,” her statement added.

The 48-year-old trained lawyer was at the helm of affairs as Ghana run one of its most transparent elections. She was appointment by the immediate past president John Dramani Mahama to replace Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan – who has served in the post since 1992.
