Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for another election after boycotting the repeat elections organised on October 26.
Kenya's opposition leader calls for another election after boycott of repeat polls
Odinga told his supporters on Sunday that the National Super Alliance (NASA) party wants election in 90 days as he discredited the rerun which was marred by violence and low turnout.
“Our position is to carry out a credible election in 90 days. We told people to stay at home and they heeded our call. The President and his deputy have lost the mandate to speak on behalf of Kenyans. They only speak for themselves,” he was quoted by local news portal Daily Nation.
Odinga made the address at the Kawangware 56 neighbourhood where political groups clashed during the election rerun disrupting the process.
“They are saying that Kenyans are tired of electioneering but I am telling them that the country is tired of their prevarication, of their refusal to have a proper election.
“We did not see the reason for participating in an election whose outcome was already predetermined,” he explained.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expected to announce the result of the election rerun today despite failure to hold the polls in 25 constituencies in the Kisumu, Migori, Siaya and Homa Bay counties due to insecurity.
As at Sunday, the electoral commission chairman Wafula Chebukati said 7,447,014 people voted representing a turnout of 43.04 per cent. This data were from verified results from 259 of the 265 constituencies including the diaspora.
